Ok, so I know people don’t mean me any harm, but for some people a little thought before speaking would be great. So for this to make sense, I have to tell you a little bit about me. I am 6’4, and I am built quite solidly. I have some padding around the middle, but I comfortably fit on the airplane. Im not a C-D Queen, as they say (when your rear gets so big you hit the passengers in the C and D seats when you walk down the aisle). So back to my story. Twice in the last month I have had passengers call me fat. Not in so many words, but thats how it came across.
I was flying the redeye from LA to New York. I was working the first class cabin, and pretty much everyone was asleep. I did my drinks and snacks, and left the snack basket out on the forward galley cabin and settled into my jumpseat for some US weekly reading. Shortly thereafter one of the people sitting in the exit row comes up to use the first class restroom. After he comes out, He starts rummaging through my first class snacks. I politely said “Sir, Those are for our first class. We have plenty of great food in the main cabin.” The man turns to me, and in a very nasty tone says “I know, I was just looking. I used to look like you then I stopped eating shit like that” turned away and stormed back to his seat. I was shocked.
A couple weeks later I was working my regular role in the main cabin. I was standing in the back galley and there was a man waiting for the restroom. We started talking, and out of nowhere he says “Now, I didn’t realize they hired people of your size to be a flight attendant” Now, before you go defending him, please keep in mind, Size doesn’t usually refer to height. Most airlines refer to their more ample passengers as “Passengers of Size.” Not so with the tall passengers. They’re usually just that unlucky guy that got stuck in the non reclining row in front of the exit. Your height doesn’t require the use of a seatbelt extension, but your “size” might. Now if he had said “You’re awfully tall to be a flight attendant” that’d be one thing, or “don’t you hit your head a lot” (both questions I get quite frequently, and the answers are “Yes I am,” and “I used to but now I pay more attention”) but he didn’t.
I know Im bigger than most flight attendants, but lets think before we talk
